Shooting cascades in Papa-a

As soon as I saw small cascades running down the stream, I immediately thought it would be good to do long exposures. It was just disappointing that I did not bring my tripod [again!]. But then I felt I had to shoot.

Awesome sunset in Butuan City

It is not very often you get to witness a stunning sunset that gives you goosebumps. For a photography junkie like me, you should never, never, never let it pass just like that.

Winning a photo contest for the first time (well, officially and with a prize for that matter) gives a different high!

Missing Cordi

From afar, I could already see the clouds rolling over the mountaintops. It was a sight to behold. So I asked the driver of our vehicle going to Buguias, Benguet to stop so I can capture this once-in-lifetime scene.

Cory Aquino: An inexhaustible gift to democracy

She further stressed the belief that the Filipino people, as a nation, can be great again. During her last State of the Nation Address (SONA), she said: I believe in the inexhaustible giftedness of the Filipino people.

At home [and at peace] with HDR Photography

HDR is not bad per se. HDR is nice to learn. In fact it is a must for non-pro like me to learn HDR to learn more about shadow and light and exposure, which is the crux of photography.

Movie: Crossroads

Some HBO movies these days are becoming too boring that missing movies is not that a big deal.  Star Movies shows newer blockbuster hits.  While shuffling from one channel to another, I chanced upon "Crossroads."  It was quite old.  With Ralph Macchio in the lead role, it must be really old!  I wonder what happened to him after his Karate Kid days?  I thought, I should take a peep at the movie.

I am not a guitar player.  I am not into blues, either, but I was hooked.

I think any movie buff and music enthusiast should watch this movie.

Here is the synopsis from HBO Asia:

Eugene Martone struggles with the devil and his destiny when he goes down to the Crossroads. Eugene is a gifted young guitarist and is obsessed with unlocking the mysteries of the blues. He finds cantankerous Willie Brown, a master of the blues harmonica, and frees him from prison. The unlikely duo hoboes from New York to Mississippi as Eugene searches for runaway Frances.

And one of the YouTube clips:

I will not go into details so not to spoil your watching.

My Rating: 8/10.

You may watch 12 clips of this movie in YouTube.  (However, 10/12 clip does not have an audio. I think this is the crucial part. Nonetheless, enjoy the movie or catch a rerun at HBO.

Chiqui Pineda and that song

Photography is not just about photographs. It is also about making friends online and off-line. I attended my first EB and photo walk last Sunday, February 10 at Quezon Memorial Circle. And it was fun meeting a bunch of guys and gals who share the same passion with you.

And perhaps, one of the best things of being online at Flickr is the fact that you get to meet people--and though they may not know it, they have touched your life in one way or another. One of them is actually meeting Chiqui Pineda online. And for some reasons I could not express, her song How Did You Know is one song that I really like. For those who do not know her, she sang the original version of How Did You Know, which was revived by Gary V.

I have not personally chatted with her, but she does join the discussion threads and her first photo challenge, the Valentine Special Challenge. She won and gave her "acceptance speech" and rendering the Pinoy Kodakero's most requested song through her podcast (update: sorry may password na pala). You can see her winning photo here.

So while watching and listening to her podcast, I am also including the lyrics of the song:

I remember so well
The day that you came into my life
You asked for my name
You had the most beautiful smile

My life started to change
I'd wake up each day feeling alright
With you right by my side
Makes me feel things will work out just fine

CHORUS
How did you know
I needed someone like you in my life
That there's an empty space in my heart
You came at the right time in my life

I'll never forget
How you brought the sun to shine in my life
And took all the worries and fears that I had
I guess what I'm really trying to say
It's not everyday that someone like you comes my way
No words can express how much I love you.

Happy Valentine's Day to all!

Pretty Anne and the Amazing Bloggers!

I am smiling at the title because it sounds like a title of a carnival show, or "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Fun Factory." I am just a bit crazy. Wala lang! (Just for the heck of it!).

I have been nasty in my earlier blog. I guess that brings out the bad thing about me. But I only get impatient with people who are inefficient!

I am now feeling better, despite my suffering from gas pains (which is the reason I cannot sleep yet) and constant burping due to hyperacidity, plus the fact that my asthma is starting to attack again, I am in my elements to talk about two good things in this blog entry.

First, I finally caught on Star Movies the over-sensationalized movie "The Devil Wears Prada". All I can say is that it is a so-so movie of Meryl Streep! For me, it is far inferior from her Bridges of Madison County, and Sophie's Choice, although she did a stunning "less talk - more acting" performance which she is really good at. Nonetheless, I am still a big fan of hers. What also caught my attention was Anne Hathaway. I just love this wide-eyed stunner! What a way to cap the night! (But I did not like the part when "Andy Sachs," her character, slept with the other guy. Ugh! The machismo in me tells it isn't really cool!).

To borrow Miranda's line: "That's all!"

Second, I think I have the "moral obligation" to name some Amazing Bloggers in my blogroll after Monaco named me as one of his Amazing Bloggers. (Thanks, again pal!).

I only maintain a few in my blogroll for me to be able to regularly check on their articles. However, it does not mean that those who will not be included in this list are less important to me.

  • Ed dela Torre for a the wisdom as a teacher and as an agent of social change and spiritual growth
  • Ruel Tafalla Photography for his different take on photography. I just love it!
  • Mother of Two by ApplesH for her cute articles about her little boy!
  • So far, So Good by Doc Ian for sharing the passion for community development
  • Literary Ek-Ek by Buraot/Ross - this is relatively new, but it caught my attention because of his love for his family. He can tickle your funny bone too with his Anak ni Kulapo blog. Mabubu-ang ka.
  • SeƱor Enrique - because I am just a fan of this great writer and photographer. Do I need to say more?
  • Vanilla and Caramel - not because she is my friend, and not because I just love the way she expresses her crisp wits. I love her more because of her great love for Zack!
  • Underside by Nina Bumanglag - for being vocal and a true Maroon!,
  • Darang Sisa - for her heartwarming articles, and of course,
  • Keyboard Monologues by Monaco for his different take on any topic under the sun, and his fearless punditry

For the rest, please give me time to read your blog.

Cheers!

Where in the Galactic Empire is Luke Skywalker?

Of course we know who Luke Skywalker is, but have you ever wondered where Mark Hamill is and what he has been doing nowadays? Hamill, the actor who portrayed Skywalker’s character in the Episodes IV, V, and VI of Star Wars, seem to have vanished into the galaxy after he did the flicks in the late 70s and early 80s.

Two of the actors who did prominent or lead roles of Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa, are still much on the scene. Harrison Ford who essayed the role of Han Solo is still very popular playing meaty roles in popular Hollywood movies. Carrie Fisher, who did Princess Leia’s role, became a writer, and wrote her first novel, Postcards from the Edge, which was also made into film in 1990. In the 90s, she did mostly off-the cam roles and played some roles like when she appeared as a therapist in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Of course, we can see her more often now, as the full-time judge of the reality TV show On the Lot.

Mark Hamill, on the other hand, did some on-cam roles after Star Wars. His last recorded acting work was Repetition in 2005 (which I am not familiar with), but one of his popular movies that hit the tills in the Philippine cinemas was Wing Commander in 1999 playing the role of Colonel Christopher Blair. While he is not seen much on movies, he lends his voice to various animated films and video games, like the popular animated flick Joseph: King of Dreams as the voice of Judah and Wing Commander Series.

Trivia: On January 11, 1977, a day before he was set to shoot one of the final scenes needed for Star Wars, Hamill was in a car accident that severely injured his face. The damage was extensive and that Hamill had to have multiple plastic surgeries to reconstruct his face. (Wikipedia).

Mark Hamill now.

On Bayang Barrios, F. Sionil Jose, and being a fan

I realize have several books by Francisco Sionil JosƩ more popularly known as F. Sionil JosƩ. I also realize I still have to buy more, which means I have to save a bit from my allowance so that I could buy all if not most of the rest of the titles that I do not have. This also reminds me that I planned to go to Solidaridad Bookshop in Padre Faura to have them signed by the old man, and perhaps, have the chance to talk to him, have a photo-op with him. That should be inputted in my celfone as a reminder, lest I want to forget again.

Having an autograph is something new to me or does not catch my fancy. Not ever in my entire life until the year 2003.

I have worked for two Presidents and rubbed elbows with one of them. I had the chance to work for Canadian and US Ambassadors, had the chance to mingle with the who’s-who in politics and government. Believe it or not, while others run berserk just to have a photo-op with them, I just stay in one corner or even offer to take their photographs. You may think how snob and smug I am. Well, maybe. But I am just too shy, that is why. Plus, I always have this eeky feeling during photo-ops. It is just too jologs. Kahit na sinong Poncio Pilato pa sya. (I hope you get what I mean).

Call me smug! But hey, not anymore! I said earlier in my promo blog about Bayang Barrios, I finally succumbed to somewhat borderline fanaticism. It was one afternoon sometime in 2003 when I left the office early to meet my wife at the mall. It was also the time when GMA 7 was also promoting its MetroPop album. It started with me buying their CD. The saleslady informed me that perhaps I would like to have the CD cover signed by one of the artists who would be performing. I asked who that artist was. She told me it was Bayang Barrios and kept on talking just to entice me because the seats were still empty and there seems to be no one interested in the promo show. But her words became muffled like murmurs in my ears already growing deaf upon hearing the name Bayang Barrios. Perhaps, I would not overrate her when I say that, for me, her name is synonymous to something that is ethereal. I love Bayang Barrios—that is why!

Now I admit that I am jologs. But I would like to clarify that my state of being jologs is not the jologs-to-the-max thing. My taste has a wide spectrum. Call it tasteful jologism (So is this another jologs morphology to justify one's self being a jologs?). After all, I adore no less than F. Sionil Jose and the popular alternative music artist of our time. And I should not forget to include Lea Salonga in my list (No. Not Regine. She is my wife’s favorite.).

So I sat there alone while waiting for my wife to come, who eventually arrived in the middle of the show. We enjoyed watching Bayang sing her winning piece Malayo Man, Malapit Din, which she wrote and composed. Then the time comes—autograph signing. I was glued to my seat. My right brain says it is time for me to go out of the enclosed area. But my left brain says I have to let go and take this one-of-a-lifetime opportunity (because it may never happen again). My wife even told me to go and line up. After all, it was Bayang Barrios and not just any teeny-bopper idol. Still, I thought that lining up in a long queue for an autograph was simply dyahe. Someone I know might see me and would endlessly tease me about it. But deep inside, I have to have it signed and not just waste the opportunity. So, the logical part of me finally cooperated and says I have to have some strategy. I have to make it quick and with a style. So I waited until there were only ten persons left. While waiting for my turn, I prepared some words to tell Bayang, then it was time for me to have the CD cover signed.

I told her, “Alam mo, noong Bagong Lumad ka pa lang with Joey Ayala, fan mo na ako.”

She smiled and said, “Talaga? Salamat!”

I wanted to talk to her more, but those hawi-boys were just so annoying because they shoved us to move on. After that, I played the song over and over again, watched any documentary or feature, and browsed some articles about her.

Nevertheless, that made my day, and I look forward to see her up-close and personal in one of her gigs at the Conspiracy Bar.

Bayang Barrios

Soon on this site....

I have never been a die hard fan. I would cringe at the thought of lining up in a long queue for authograph signing. But sometime in 2003, I let my guards off, and what the heck! Right infront of me is one of the finest singers in town--Bayang Barrios!
Simply Exhilarating!

Human Tetris--anyone?

I still remember when Tetris was the "IN" thing and you just feel completely "obsolete" and left out if you don't have this handheld game.

I was browsing in Yahoo and found this video. Looks like silly game but fun!

Watch this video.

Trying out on scrapbooking

Scapbooking has become so popular these days, that almost all bookstores seem to be filled with cutesy thing-a-ma-jigs about scrapbooking. There are even TV shows featuring this form of arts and crafts.

I wanted to make one, basically to store the prints of my photos. Disappointingly, however, I have no plenty of time to spare specially that I am busy working on some reports.

Finally, I tried to have a hands-on on scrap booking when I was forced to help my son make his "prayer book" which was given as an assignment in their religion class. His teacher told them they should make their prayer book really neat and beautiful. So, I thought, making a scrapbook-like prayer book would be a nice idea.

There are still plenty of photos to be organized into a family album. Just had no time to put them all together. Plus, I still have to edit photos stored in some CDs before I could print them. My wife and I planned to put these photos into something like a scrapbook. Again, if time permits.

But then, I was forced to make one for my son. The 6-page prayer book, a la scrapbook, took me 3 hours to do. Not bad considering it was my my first time to make one. And my two sons were just too eager to help, especially when I started burning the sides of paper where I printed one of the prayers or when I made a frame out of a special hand-made paper I bought from NBS.

Perhaps, I could make this into a profitable venture like what my friend, Jewels does. After all, I still have my artistic juices, I think.

Not a bad idea at all!

Population Education 101

LAST MONDAY, I caught "The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human" on Star Movies.

The movie appeared like a Discovery or National Geographic documentary on the mating practices of some species of animals. This time, the focus is on how an alien observes how human beings would measure up in this human behavior. The story narrates in a funny, anthropological and sociological jargon (or even alien lingo), the process of sexual attraction, love, single life, dating, mating or copulation process, the dreaded introduction of their mates to the parents and siblings who must approve of their relationship, fear of parenthood and the perpetuation of human species.

And these are my favorite lines:
Narration while the male and female human species are watching sunset: "
"most say that this is the most beautiful aspect of the human mating ritual... other than the copulation..."

And this really made me guffaw; Not exact the words but sounds like this:

"Humans must be prepared for marriage when the male and female species say sweet things, and they promise to stick with each other until they are old and yucky."

The movie was really hilarious! Those who are married, or who are about to get married would surely identify with the story.

Definitely, it was also a breather from the usual plot of romantic comedy--educational and fun--which reminds me of my Population Education class back in high school.
